Okay, I've had enough of this chilled out music the past couple days! The sun's out, I got to sleep in this morning... Yeah. Time for some Shirobon.

.sylCMYK - Heartbroken
It's so late in the day! I went to 8bc.org after finding that there weren't any new releases (to me) on any of the chiptune labels I check, and was scanning to see where I last left off, when I saw .sylCMYK's track "Heartbroken." I had listened to this last night and really liked it, and so I was glad to be reminded of it, since it means I don't have to search for an 8BD today! You might remember our good friend Sylvester from his other songs featured here. I love that he is talented AND has a signature style (but a style that seems unable to lock him into a particular sound).

2NRO8OT - Constellation
Every time a new guy pops up on 8BC who is:
- Russian
- Speaks in very broken English
- Leaves lots of comments
- Has notably good music (or at least professional sounding music)
I instantly suspect it to be the work of the infamous 8BC.org user "Mazi" who has had innumerable banned accounts, with just as many #1 positions on the 8BC.org weekly "like" charts, and has plagiarized from a very large number of different artists, both visual (for "album art" or whatever) and musical (sometimes taking entire collections of music and just releasing it under a different name). I'm just saying, here and now, that Tune Robot could be another Mazi account. He is all those things.
That said, it's a good tune and it does sound original enough (though you can never be sure). We'll see how this plays out, and if "Tune Robot" turns out to be another scam. Enjoy the tune!

Subtracted - You Know
Starts off as a pretty straightforward tune, it gradually gains some Justice-like qualities as Subtracted seems to discover how to do things with his DAW mid-song. It's a great effect, and I suspect the file of the song would be something like an instruction booklet, introducing more and more features as the song plays through. The song is great and the production is really top notch, this is a guy who knows what good music sounds like and how to get his stuff there.

STA$D400 - Machine Code
A Commodore 64 song for a change, we haven't had one for a while. You'll also notice I've put, in addition to the website and "Get It!" links, a link to the 8bc.org entry for this song. Not every track will have this link, since not every song I pick is from 8bc.org, but I'd like to start posting links that people who like the song can follow in order to reach the artist themselves! So if, say, some song gets featured off of a release, I might link you to the website itself if comments are available, or to an applicable forum post on 8bc.org, or what have you. Anyway, enjoy this tasty jam!

Mahamajama - Whale Hail
Mahamajama's last track on 8BD was really chilled out and harmonic, and while it was a fantastic and lovely song I don't think it quite painted the right picture. That's because Mahamajama makes some great upbeat funky tracks and really knows how to bend a note just right. BUT in this track, it's not even his tracker mastery you get to be exposed to, but some great guitar work as well. Yep, I'm feeling the chiptune/guitar vibe this week.

Pompei - Jazz Chip Demo
Okay so let's see. This song is by Pompei, who used to be Pokemon Posers. Well it's not all by him, see, the original LSDJ loop was by Arlen, who used to be Velo. Both of these guys are from Michigan, that's where I'm from, and I think that's just great. Also, Pompei plays the guitar and he modified the LSDJ loop to make a progression, which is why I say that it's "his" song. Anyway, listen! There's a bit of a setup intro thing, but then it starts. It's short, but I am in love with it.

Nestrogen - Crushed To Bits
It's rare that I feature a song with singing in it! I think the last one I featured was Bud Melvin's track "I'm Old Fashioned", which had generally positive reactions from people that listened to it. The odd part about this track isn't exactly that it has vocals, though, but that this song is so different stylistically from the rest of the album it's a part of. I think the achilles' heel of this EP (which is quite an EP since it's 13 tracks with a cumulative length of 33:38) is the mixing more than the composition. The melodies often seem buried or just weak and it's not the melody itself but the presence it holds in the song that forms this problem. I liked Crushed To Bits because it didn't suffer from this, and actually proved to be quite the opposite with a great saw wave right off the bat that knows exactly what's up.

Spamtron - Killer Robot Guerin
It sounds like an LSDJ recording with some sort of mod/demoscene track overlay, all in a nice blues scale. But at the same time it's super rockin'? Sooooo... Not quite sure what to make of it. I like it a lot though.

A Jump to Lightspeed - Insomnia
Off of that crazy two-artist release that I featured a while ago, Insomnia is a cool LSDJ track that deserved mentioning. Now that I think about it, I shoulda had one track by each artist that day! Hmm. Oh well. Oh and sorry it's so late! Worked on my car this morning, then went to work, then got out... Then had to scramble to get an 8BD! Normal schedule tomorrow. :D

tssf - Megaman Medley
tssf says he's been working on this project for 3 weeks, and contains a track from all of the original Megaman games (with sound effects and everything thrown in there!). And for anyone who thinks he just jammed it together with some audio editor, he's got the NSF file to prove its authenticity!
Anyway I like seeing projects like this come to fruition (not that I knew about it before it was finished, but I like the result), not to mention the technical aptitude required to perfectly recreate the drums and instrumentation used in the original games. Impressive!

GAIDEN music - Gameboy Dub Part 2
This is the style of music that people in England dance to (fact: it's not like American club music). I'd dare say they know what's good, more so than the places that are continuously blaring "Poker Face" and... Kanye West or whatever. But maybe that's 'cuz I'm some Anglo-Saxon dude and this is the music of my people.

The HT - A Trap
Some ravey jams made with not one but three retro instruments! A Commodore, Atari 2600, and an NES. You guys might not know this but the Atari is a weird friggin' system to make music with. It's got a sound chip that's quite different from other "conventional" consoles (like the NES or Game Boy or even the old computers like the Amiga or Atari ST). But it all combines very nicely! Of course, he's probably just naming the VSTs he used, and not the physical hardware he mashed together to make this track. Oh well!!

ok_ikumi - chrsztna
Nanoloop song, refer to what I said yesterday about the "trademark sound". Yeah, this is a Nanoloop track all right! It's a smokin' hot Nanoloop track, though. First half: Absolutely killer. Second half: Good, but I wish the first half's melody made a comeback. OH WELL.

Matt Shogi - Ballad Of The Prince
Some crazy LSDJ antics. I used to think that LSDJ was a program that didn't produce a "normal" sound. Like it was capable of enough variety so as to be undetectable based on the music alone. You know how the Korg DS-10 songs always sound a bit similar? Or Nanoloop, that's another pretty easy one to tell. But the more I listen to tracks made with LSDJ, the more I realize that the people that are good at making music with that program have an affinity for abusing arpeggios, making crazy tough noises and basically just kicking out a bunch of thrashing music. Wigfred - Sell
Despite a couple nitpicks I have with the instrument, this is right up my alley. Not only is it a super slick track made with FL, it's also severely overlooked since this guy had the misfortune of uploading a track right before Chipzel, and on the same page as the notorious Sievert, co-conspirator of the Space Captain Sievert/Dr. Szliszka epic chiptune battle (both Chipzel and Sievert are currently enjoying about 10 times the page views of this song).

Lawrence Power - Sound Team JDK homage 01
Off of a really cool collaboration effort by the label behind that ol' Weezer release a few weeks back, the Pterodactyl Squad Compilation is a healthy mix of a whole lot of stuff which I'm sure you'll enjoy. This song in particular reminds me of Gradius or R-Type 3, and since shooter music is so cool but I haven't featured any, at least not in quite a while, it's gotta go up.

Sloopygoop - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
An LSDJ cover of one of The Beatles' most recognized tracks. There's a whole bunch of Beatles stuff happening today, and the Chiptune scene isn't letting it go by unnoticed. The group "8-Bit Operators", the guys that did a Kraftwerk cover album a couple years ago that got the attention of quite a few people, is putting together a Beatles tribute album, and nine of the 20 tracks have been put up on a Myspace account. No word on when it's coming out though, as they have to work out some licensing stuff and all that.

Since I can't seem to find anything I like today, I'm hitting iTunes and giving you an old track that I really like. This song, off of the release Viva La Revolution!, is just a little catchy song that I find entertaining and nice. The entire album is full of odd voice samples and some wackiness but it's worth your time! Anyway. Enjoy!

Some music that sounds like it was written by one of the masters (mostly Virt to my ear), this song really caught me off guard. Great composition from a serious up-and-comer! Expect more tracks from him to be featured here, assuming he keeps up skills like this.

Jonte Nyhlin - Imagination
This guy's on a roll! Second consecutive submission to get on 8BD by this guy. Actually this probably says more for the lack of viable options than it does for Jonte's talent. Don't get me wrong, these tracks are awesome, I just mean to say that if there were more songs on 8bc.org recently that I liked as much as this, he wouldn't have been on here twice (since I like to vary artists as much as possible while not forcing myself to do songs that I don't like just to get a new name). Anyway, this song has an awesome pitch-bent melody (the first thing you hear in the song, but it sounds really great after you've been through the song and it comes back in) that, by itself, makes me love this track.

A long building track, you might even call it a rhapsody since it goes through many themes, styles, and speeds. Regardless of what you think of the intro (which is probably about a third of the track's length), this is a dance tune. DANCE TUNE. You'll find out.

By the organizer of the release (I assume, since Jellica runs Kittenrock, the netlabel on which the The Very Best of Ibiza Chip Chillout Vol. 21 compilation was released) comes a track pretty representative of the mood of this album. A lot of great songs made the cut here, and they'll all get you into a great chill if you let them do their magic on you. Highly recommended for you overworked/stressed out folks out there!
